| Description |
This location features prominently in the book "The Bitter Lemons of Cyprus by Lawrence Durrell. Nearby is the Abbey which is set on a steep slope and is well worth a visit for the views inside and out. The prize-winning book describes the Cypriot "Enosis" (union with Greece and freedom from British rule) movement in the 1950's and the violent occurrences in relation to that. In the end Durrell leaves Cyprus very hastily for his safety. At the time of writing the book Bellapais and the area of the tree were sleepy, quiet places. There have been changes since then. A group of Tavarnas/restaurants/cafe's have sprouted up, making the area quite crowded. In addition this whole area, once Greek is now part of Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus. |
