The banks be-come more and more picturesque; here are calcareousrocks, covered in places with a ferruginous crust, andwhence flow streams endowed with petrifying properties,while hills, rising abruptly to a great height, containgrottoes ornamented by stalactites; there, are beds ofsand, islands on which sport in the sun a crowd of iguanas;everywhere, a rich vegetation, mingled with tufts of bam-boo, in which fight and squabble the chimpanzees, onwhom Phrai exercises his skill, and which afford him adelicious repast. We embarked in a very light pirogue, and, during thefirst day, passed the boats from Petchaboune, which hadleft Khao-Khoc the night before; for the current is stillrapid, even though the water is so low that in many 102 TIGERS NEAR BOATIOUME. Chap. XVI. places you have to drag the boat over the sand, and poleshave to be used instead of oars. Tigers, which are rare at Khao-Khoc, are more commonin the environs of Boatioume, where they destroy manyof the cattle.
