r deeds and wider actions became theorder of the Pharaohs day, so the mines wereextended and the number of workmen increased ;and it was not long before the station at El Kabgrew into a city almost as large as the metropolis.In Dynasty XII. (b.c. 2000) a wall was builtaround it, which stands to this day, in order toprotect it from incursions from the desert. Gradu-ally great temples were erected here, and the city,now known as Nekheb and later as Eileithyias-polis, was one of the busiest centres in theworld. The ruins of the old caravanserai are of wonder-ful interest. One may pass through the narrowdoorway of the fortified enclosure, and in the silentarea where once the soldiers and miners camped,and where now a few goats graze, one feels com-pletely shut off from the world of the present day.The dark walls rise around one almost to their fullheight, and one may still ascend and descend thesloping ramps where the sentries paced in the oldendays.
