Here theworkmen could sit in the shade to ease the thirstwhich exercise on the hot hills so soon creates;and on our return journey up the pass welooked back more than once to this cool galleryand to the plunge-bath with a kind of envy ofthe past. The quarries are cut here and there on thehillside without any regularity. The blocks ofporphyry were prised out of the rock whereverthe work could most easily be carried on, andthe action of the years has so dulled the brokensurfaces that they now look almost like thoseof the natural mountain.
