From the island a boat carried one acrossto the little reedy bay, from whence a trudge ofhalf a mile or so over the soft sand brought oneon to the upper levels of the desert. Lookingtowards the north, the road which led eventuallyto Lower Egypt was to be seen; to the west theeye wandered over the undulating wilderness tothe far horizon, made awful by the presence ofthe Dead; and to the south the sand-drifts andthe rocky hillocks hid the untravelled paths toAam and the Land of the Ghosts.
