the middle one, with its polygonal dome andskylight. Brilliant colours and graceful stucco arab-esques, brightened up and adorned every nook andcorner, and even the doors were handsomely panelled,carved, and painted. Every precaution was taken thatthe wa^ward ladies should not be tempted to stray byanything they could see, and still less to let wanderingfeet follow wandering eyes, for the sole opening in thewall was firmly barred with iron. These rooms were probably devoted to the use ofthe 25rincipal wife, or it may have been a favouriteslave. The other division of the harem or privateapartments lay on the opposite side of the square fromthe entrance-passage. Here a door led into a smallsecondary court, round which were the kitchen andone quadrangular room, and an upper suite of smallrooms.
