His boyhood home at Bonn was an intellectual center whereJean Paul Richter often came. His mother was of noble birthand a woman of marked literary attainments and strong womanlyqualities. His father, M. 1. Weber, Professor of Anatomy, theauthor of several books and atlases, was a man of great renown. Dr. Gustav Weber came to his full development in the lattersixties, when he was about forty years old, but his ripest periodwas from his forty-fifth to his fiftieth year. He was largelyinstrumental in erecting St. Vincents Charity Hospital in Cleve-land in 1863 and 1864 to take care of the wounded soldiers asthey were sent north from the southern battlefields of the Warof the Rebellion. He organized a Charity Hospital MedicalSchool and started the first medical journal in Cleveland, butdid not contribute much to medical literature, as his time was 608

Dr. Gustav C. E. Weber. IN ME MORI AM. 609 wholly taken up with an enormous professional work, and theexacting demands of a wealthy clientel distributed over a widearea. It was in 1898 that he retired from active surgical practiceand became Counsel in Nuremberg, where he remained fouryears. When he departed for Germany he gave to the ClevelandMedical Library his books and instruments, as well as financialhelp. Upon his return to Cleveland in 1903, he was tendered abanquet by the Cleveland Medical Association. It was a largerepresentative gathering of the medical profession of Ohio andadjoining states. After Dr. Weber had delivered his address^his old friend and colleague, Dr. Thad. A.
