Then I moved over to the ViceregalLodge, and again enjoyed the same boundless hospitalityof Lord and Lady Minto. From my window I sawagain, sharp and clear, the crests of the Himalayas, andbeyond the mountains and valleys of Tibet stretched outin a boundless sea. What wealth and luxury! I livedlike a prince, walked on soft rugs and meditated, lay andread Swedish journals in a deep soft bed, by electriclight, and bathed in a porcelain bath, attended by Hindusin the viceregal livery—I who had lately gone in rags andtended sheep. The occasion was a lecture, andon the dais hung with gold-embroidered brocade, wherethe thrones usually stand, was set up a large map ofTibet. The front seats were occupied by the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, Lord Kitchener of Khartum,the Governor of the Panjab, the Maharajas of Alwar andGwalior; and among the guests might be seen generalsand superior officers. State secretaries, men of science, andmembers of the diplomatic corps then present in Simla.The Military Secretary, Colonel Victor Brooke, cameforward and announced the arrival of the Viceroy andLady Minto. I was trembling with stage fright, butbefore I knew anything about it, my opening words,Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, soundedthrough the brilliant saloon, and then followed anaccount of my last journey.
