Champaign.There was practically no wind and the weather was clear. The temp-erature was about 70°F. The train consisted of empty cars,many ofwhich were just out of the shop. The length of the train was changedtwice during the run. The make-up of the train,in order from headto rear ,was as follows: From Chicago to Ctto, Dynamometer Car25 Box Cars 28 Coal 1 Caboose Total Weight 710 Tons From Otto to Gilman, Dynamometer Car18 Box Cars28 Coal 1 Caboose Total Weight 619 Tons From Oilman to Champaign, Dynamometer Car28 Coal Cars 1 Caboose Total Weight 381 Tons The train consisted mainly of coal cars,which give an un-favorable distribution of weight,hence a high resistance. The resistances determined were for portions of track havinguniform gradient and alinement. At the instant of passing a milepost,marks were made on the speed and dynamometer cards so that theposition of the car could be located by means of these points.
