Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Town Lock, Newark on Trent In the 18th century, changes were made to the course of the River Trent which improved navigability to the town. Town Lock, just upstream from the castle stands on a cut which avoids a weir on the Newark Cut. The main stream of the river passes to the north of the town. The result of these changes was to make this ancient town into an important trading centre from where it was possible to navigate across the country by means of the Trent & Mersey Canal. The riverside warehouses bear witness to this trade.
