Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The taulas (Catalan for "tables," a.k.a. taules) are unique to the island of Menorca (Minorca, Balearic Islands). Archaeologists have determined that they were erected between 2,600 and 2,200 years ago, and that their purpose was religious. There are about thirty of them, including seven that stand like this one—horizontal slab on top of a vertical one (one of them, at Binissafullet Petit, whose top slab was on the ground, was restored in 1991).
Note
You will find in a number of Wikipedia pages that these monuments belong to the Talaiotic Culture, or Period. This appears to be incorrect, at least according to V. Lull of Grupo de Arqueoecología Social del Mediterráneo de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. This author suggests that the Talaiotic Culture occurred between 2,850 and 2,550 years ago, and is characterized by another type of megalithic monument, the talaiots, of which there are almost 300 everywhere on the island. Properly speaking, the taulas belong to what V. Lull calls the Postalaiotic Culture, which occurred between 2,600 and 2,200 years ago. The taulas and the talaiots represent two distinct and somewhat unrelated cultures.
