Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Italian weekly L'Illustrazione Italiana featured this illustration in its August 26, 1877 issue, on page 128. There was a very short text relating to torpedoes on page 135.

The top picture (Turkish fleet in Suda Bay practicing preparations against a supposed torpedo attack) shows the Turkish Navy preparing for defence against attacks by Russian spar-torpedo boats. This was done with a boom across the water and with spar-torpedo launches of their own. The nearest ironclad is also equipped with a torpedo net for protection.

The bottom picture (Turkish divers cutting Russian torpedoes) shows Turkish divers clearing a Russian mine-field. Note that all aquatic explosives were referred to as "torpedoes" at the time. The next issue of the weekly - on September 2 - had the full story on page 151. Here it is explained that the Russians might have torpedo boats with Whitehead and Harvey torpedoes - much more dangerous than spar torpedoes.

The defence scene is of Suda Bay, and the clearing of the mine-field is at Poti.
