DescriptionTondo e quadro detail (Bianco, 1436).jpg |
English: Detail from the tondo e quadro ("circle and square") of the 1436 atlas of Venetian cartographer Andrea Bianco. Detail shows the upper-left corner of the square grid. There is a distance bar scale, with two different scales. The top bar (with tiny dots) measures a unit of the square grid at 20 miles (each dot is 1 mile). The bottom bar (with lines) measures a unit of the square grid at 100 miles (each vertical red line is 10 miles). Bianco notes that by using the 20m-per-unit scale the 8 x 8 grid quadro will have a total length of 160 miles. Notice also that Bianco has sixteen rays emanating from the corner, implying he is using half-quarter winds #eighth winds, otava, 5.625 degrees. The 1436 Atlas is held by the Biblioteca nazionale Marciana, Venice. |
