Text[edit]
Thos. W. Bankes, Old Resident Of City Is Dead. One of Pioneers of Little Rock Dies as Result of Stroke of Appoplexy. Thomas W. Bankes, one of the pioneers of Little Rock, was known by all the older citizens, died, suddenly at his rooms, 502 Main street at 7 o'clock last night. Very few of his friends knew of his illness, although his death, which was caused by apoplexy, followed an illness of two weeks. The deceased was about 70 years of age. Twenty-five years ago he was the leading photographer of the city, an artist and a writer of more than ordinary ability. For 30 years past he was a resident of Chicago. He returned from Chicago last July, and spent much of his time at the home of his friend. Col. Thomas Lafferty. His most intimate friends last night were unable to state where his relatives reside and every effort Was being made to locate them. The funeral arrangement will probably be announced today. Mr. Bankes was in low spirits almost the entire time since his return to Little Rock, being deeply affected by the passing away of so many of his old friends. He grieved deeply over the death of Col. John O. Fletcher and Chas. F. Penzel, having been for almost a lifetime on terms of intimate friendship with them. Almost his last literary work was the writing of a poem as yet unpublished, entitled, "Passing Away," inspired by the death of those he had known so many years.
