English: This print representing the East India Ship 'Vernon', Geo. Denny, Commander, on her voyage out, fitted with a Steam Engine of 30 horse power, passing HM ships Edinburgh & Blenheim 74 beating down Channel on the 21st of September 1839 off Benbridge [sic, i.e. Bembridge], Isle of Wight... Print inscribed, 'This Print representing the East India Ship 'Vernon', Geo Denny Commander, on her voyage out, fitted with a Steam Engine of 30 horse power, passing HM ships 'Edinburgh' & 'Blenheim' ,74s, beating down Channel on the 21st of September 1839 off Benbridge [sic], Isle of Wight...'. The ship is Green's 'Vernon' of 1838. This print from an original painting by John Lynn (see BHC3686) shows her with her original auxiliary paddles, later removed. See also PAJ2634, another copy (illustrated), PAH9327 and PAH9330. Her sister ship, 'Earl of Hardwick' (see PAH9320) was also originally fitted with paddles. This print is stored in a mount with another copy (PAI6594) in the NMM collection. The Museum has a further image (BHC3202) of the 'Earl of Hardwick'. |
