Thecountry makes all the common wines for herown consumption, and the brandies, richwmes, and fruits exported form a consider-able source of wealth. Many thousandsof men, women, and children, are employedin these industries. At Seville and othertowns in the south, the women pick theoranges ready to be taken to the ships.Great heaps of golden fruit line the groves,which are afterwards sorted, the better fruitbeing wrapped in paper before it is packed. One of the oldest industries is pottery.The jarro. or earthen pots used for water,are made of white or red clay, unglazed, andvery beautiful in shape. The J«rro are soldby women in the markets of the towns for afew reales—that is to say, about five or sixEnglish pence. Spanish workers are universally poor,receiving wages so low that it is surprising172

In the streets of the townsyou see men and women at work at the edgeof pavements, making and mending boots,working sewing-machines, preparing leathergoods, ironware, and other commodities.The shops and small manufactories are opento the street; you can see the occupantswithin making ropes and baskets, saddle-bags, brushes, and a variety of wares.
