Both boys and girls first go toschool when about six years of age—someearlier—and it is the ambition of most of theboys to go to college. In many cases educa-tion is not considered complete until thelad reaches the age of eight-and-twenty, andit is, therefore, not much to be wondered atthat the average Japanese is generally sowell informed. As most official appointments and ques-tions of rank depend upon the examinationsa man has passed, the Japanese parentnaturally regards school conduct and appli-cation to study as very important things. 126
