The value of all the productsof the fisheries in 1880 was $43,046,953. It is not possible to state even approximately how large aproportion of the value of the products of the fisheries are prac-tically paid out in the form of wages, since to a very great ex-tent the fishermenare the owners of the boats, and carry on thebusiness upon their own account; and in most cases of deep-seafishing, the fishermen receive as pay a certain fixed proportion ofthe catch, another portion going to the owner of the boats, whoalso furnishes the outfit.
