THE RAMSAY MEMORIAL It may be interesting in an audience of Chemists to referto a Fund, with the management of which I am concerned asone of the Trustees, that is, the Ramsay Memorial Fund, foundedin memory of one of the greatest Chemists in the World, Britishborn and bred too. For thirty-five years Sir William Ramsayoccupied a foremost place in the ranks of Scientific Investigators,and his discoveries in the realm of Chemical Science earr ed forhim a world-wide reputation ; his portrait is shown in Plate 9.Sir William spent no less than twenty-six years of his pro-fessional career at the University College, London. The Memorial Fund raised in his memory now amounts toover £53,000, divided into (a) the provision of £25,000 for thefoundation of a Laboratory of Chemical Engineering in con-nection with the Uni^ersity College, London ; (/>) the foundationof Ramsay Memorial Fellowships for the advancement of 24 Plate 9.

SIR WILLIAM RAMSAY, F.R.S. Research in Chemical Science. Each Fellowship is worth about£250 per annum, with a grant attached of £50 towards expenses,and is tenable for one year in any University of the UnitedKingdom. The Fellowship may be renewed for a further yearif the Fellow is considered satisfactory and desires an extensionof the Fellowship. There are at present two Fellowships held in the UnitedKingdom. The first British Fellow, Mr. William Davies, waselected in July, 1920, and was re-elected for a second year inJuly, 1921. The second Fellow, Mr. Alan Ernest Mitchell, wasalso elected on this date. There is a third Ramsay Fellowshipin the United Kingdom, limited to candidates from Glasgow.This Fellowship is at present vacant. It is to be hoped that someof our Sheffield Chemists may be able to obtain one or more ofthese Fellowships, founded in memory of this great Englishman.
