g the other square houses of Salem, thisfine old residence stands architecturally unique anddistinct. Like the Cook-Oliver house, it was manyyears in the building, for those were the days ofthorough workmanship, and without machinery ofany sort for the manufacture of either structurallumber or wood trim, the preparation of the materialwas in itself a slow and expensive matter. Erectedin 1782, it was not completed until 1800. In thisfact lies the source of its greatest charm, for thewestern half is purely Georgian in conception,whereas the eastern half, built eighteen years later,obviously reflects Adam influence throughout, andso in a single house constitutes to a certain degreea record of the development of Mclntires mindtoward a style of greater delicacy and refinement. Exteriorly this is particularly true of the pictur-esque one-story portion along one side of the brick-paved stable courtyard, its series of broad doors underelliptical fanlights somewhat after the manner of a ( J20)
