JAN HUYGHEN VAN LINSCHOTEN, Born in 15G3 at Haarlem, died in 1611 at Enkhuizen. After a portrait in liis work, Navigatio in Orientalem sive Lusitanorum Indiam, Hagre Comitis, 1599. On the p^, July there came to Toxar hunters from the WhiteSea, who spoke another language than the Russians, andbelonged to another race of men—they were evidently Finns orKarelians. A large number of whales were seen in the haven,which gave occasion to a remark by Linschoten that whale-fishing

After the ice had broken up, andcrosses with inscriptions giving information of their movementshad been erected on the shore, they sailed on. On the ;jSt Julythey sighted Vaygats. They landed at a headland marked withtwo crosses, and there fell in with a native, clad in much thesame way as a Kilduin Lapp, who soon took to flight. Otherheadlands marked with crosses were afterwards visited, andplaces where idols were found set up by hundreds. Linschotenalso landed on that Idol Cape which was visited during thevoyage of the Vega. There were then from three to fourhundred wooden idols, which, according to Linschotens descrip-tion, were very similar in appearance to those we saw. Theywere so ill made, says he, that one could scarcely guess thatthey were intended to represent men.
