[edit]DescriptionThe view from Stoke Level Crossing to the site of Stoke Junction Halt (geograph 3603289).jpg |
English: The view from Stoke Level Crossing to the site of Stoke Junction Halt The line across the Hoo Peninsula is single track and one of the most interesting lines in Kent. Passenger trains ran on this line from 1882 to 1961, which seems surprising now as it doesn't really serve any significant centres of population. It is still in use by regular container trains on their way via Hoo Junction to and from Thamesport on the Isle of Grain. A train heading west over the level crossing at Grain can be seen at 3603260. Ahead to the right of the line is the site of Stoke Junction Halt. This was opened by the Southern Railway on 7th July 1932 at the same time as the branch to Allhallows-on-Sea which diverged from the 'main' line on the other side of the crossing. Stoke Junction Halt closed on 4th December 1961, the same day as the Allhallows-on-Sea branch, as well as all passenger services on the entire line. A new flyover has recently been opened to take the A228 over the railway line above the site of the former halt and this can be seen ahead. There is now no road traffic over the level crossing and the road is closed off. |
