Masked dances to cast away evil spirits are still happening in rural areas of Moldova region of Romania. Now they reflect the influences of the pop culture and actuality.

English: Mask dances have pre-Christian origins, in fact as far back as the Paleolithic in Romania , when wearing masks was practiced at ceremonies related to fertility and fecundity worship. The masks embody evil demons, the masqueraders choosing spooky-looking disguises, also highlighted by mimicry, gestures or props. On New Years eve or around New Year, groups of young men and women wear masks and dance -this is a tradition in rural region of Eastern Romania , called Moldova ( ex.Suceava, Botosani, Neamt counties). .
As you can see from the photos, the masks have undergone functional transformations over time, from ritual dance to entertainment. For example, you can see in today's photos a mix of archaic masks and current socio-political characters: Donald Trump, the Joker, Anonymous Mask etc. An idea for a thesis in anthropology faculty :)
