The thorns are slender and strong, becoming 6 to 8 inches long andbranched on old limbs. The leaves are leathery and polished, narrowl;; obovate, I to 4 inches long THE RED HAW (Cratagus mollis) The large red haws, which ripen in early September, are fuzzy around the base of the incurving calyx tips. The fruit stems andleaf linings are pubescent. In spring the new growth is thickly coated with white hairs

THE DOTTED HAW (Cratagus punctata) The pale dots on the fruit give this tree its name. The grey-green leaves taper narrowly to the petioles. The prominent,depressed veins and the long, straight spines are shown in theupper plate THE SCARLET HAW (Cratatgus pruinosa) The lower right-hand picture shows the broad-based leafwith its lobed margin and the short, stout spines. Theleaves are blue-green, and the unripe fruit has a hoarybloom upon it The Hawthorns rigid twigs. Thorns straight, slim, 2 to 3 inches long, brown orgrey.
