y. Each species yields valuable wood, andsweet, edible nuts. Each one deserves planting as an ornamentaland shade tree. Our American forests show four species—two spread over theeastern half of the continent, one grows in the Southwest, andone in California. To these have been added valuable exoticspecies. The English or Persian walnut (Juglans regia) is grownin the Southern States and in California; and two Japanesespecies, /. Sieboldiana and /. cordijormis, both of the butternuttype but vastly superior to it, thrive in the regions where theEnglish walnut is not hardy. There is also a Manchurian speciesin cultivation here. One or more walnuts belong in the WestIndies and South America. Butternut, Oil Nut, White Walnut (/. cinerea, Linn.)—A short-trunked, spreading tree, 50 to 75 feet high, with broad,rounded dome. Bark grey, rough, with broad furrows andnarrow ridges, showing paler under bark. Shoots covered withclammy down. Wood light brown, light, soft, coarse grained, with 126
