I Winter huds Flowering branch: A. Staminate flower; B. Pistillate flower THE SUGAR MAPLE (Acer Saccharum) 3 Fruiting branch The blossoms appear in May; the soft, hairy flower clusters are greenish. Some flowers (pistillate) thrust out forkedtongues. Others (staminate) extrude a bunch of stamens. The leaf is thin and dark green with pale lining. The smooth,plump seeds ripen in October. The twigs are slender and smooth and dotted with pale, breathing pores The Maples The Black Maple, or Black Sugar Maple (Acer nigrum,Michx.), is now counted a distinct species, but was long regardedas a variety of Acer Saccharum. The best year-round characterto look for is the orange colour of the stout branchlets. Thetrees head is less compact and has a duller, darker green foliagemass than that of the hard maple. The leaves vary much insize and shape, but in general have three pointed lobes withbroad, shallow sinuses and scantly toothed or unbroken margins;the basal sinus is often closed by the overla
