THE BALD CYPRESS (Taxodium dhtichum) The base of the trunk flares abruptly into lobed buttresses. Pointed knees rise from the long horizontal roots of oldtrees. They are supposed to be means of aeration to the inundated roots. The leafy, lateral twigs are deciduous. Cypressswamps are found in the maritime regions of the Southeastern states The Cypresses of unfamiliar flowers. The rainy season which opens in Mayinundates this land for fully half of the year. The wood of bald cypress is very important in the lumbertrade, being soft, handsome, easily worked and durable in waterand in the soil. Buckets and bowls are made by hollowing outknees of suitable sizes. Lover though it be of Southern swamps, yet there is no hand-somer spire of living green in any Northern upland park than thissame bald cypress.
