dness of itswood. Tan-bark oak calls attention to the tannin whichmakes this tree the prey of peelers throughout its range.Only the black oak yields as good bark to the tanner. The Yellow Oak (Quercus acuminata, Sarg.) has smaller andnarrower leaves than Quercus Prinus, and the margins are coarselyand sharply toothed. They closely resemble chestnut leaves inform, but are lined with pale pubescence. The tree reaches 160feet in height in the lower Ohio Valley and extends from Vermontto Minnesota, and south to Alabama and Texas. It prefers drysoil, and is a worthy shade and ornamental tree. The silverygrey bark and handsome leaves, shining yellow-green above andwhite beneath, trembling on slender petioles, make it a beautifulobject in any landscape. The yellow-green of the foliage massgives the tree its common name. The Chincapin Oak (Quercus prinoides, Willd.) is a shrub,which spreads by underground stems. Its opening leaves aresilvery below and orange-red above. In autumn they turn 204

THE OVERCUP OAK (Quercus lyrata) The narrow leaves broaden toward the apex ; the largest of the lobes are above the middle. The leaf lining is densewhite down. The wood is confused with other white oak. The bark is gray, tinged with red. The best character is theacorn, which is usually entirely enclosed by the cup.
