mannerismswhen they are bad, for bad mannerisms are asdestructive to good acting as weeds to a garden;but when mannerisms are indexes of personalitythey have a distinct value. One of the most frequent errors of dramaticcriticism is to condemn the peculiarities ofmanner, gesture, and elocution which arereally the distinguishing signs of histrionicability. It is upon these personal odditiesthat the imitators and caricaturists of im-portant players invariably seize. To carica-ture the late Henry Irving it was necessaryonly to exaggerate the hollow intonation ofhis delivery. In Joseph Jeffersons case itwas his lisp and quavering utterance whichwere emphasized. Ellen Terrys bouncing free-dom of movement made her acting easy tocopy.
