English: brightly winged tarantula hawk insect sips nectar from a mesquite bloom The tarantula hawk is a wasp that hunts the tarantula spider when it is egg laying time. Females are hesitant to sting people, but the sting is said to be extraordinarily painful to humans. The insect sips nectar, it seeks out the tarantula when it is time to lay eggs inside the live spider. When the eggs hatch the young have their first meal right at hand.
