From the period when Egypt aspired tobecome one of the great powers of the world, she doubtless endeavoured tobring her naval force to the same pitch of perfection as her land forces couldboast of, and her fleets probably consisted of the best vessels which the dock-yards of that day could turn out. Phfrnician vessels of this period may there-fore be regarded with reason as constructed on lines similar to those of theEgyptian ships, differing from them merely in tlie minor details of theshape of the hull and manner of rigging.
