The frontedge of the cradle is cushioned with rubber rolls andthe cradle, itself, is of such form that it may be droppedon any road surface without risk of breaking. It is, ofcourse, not practicable for a projecting fender of thiskind to be carried close to the ground all the time, butit is possible for the motorman to instantly drop it whilehis hands are free for other purposes. It folds againstthe dashboard so that it can be folded up when the caris run in the barn. Over three thousand of these fendersare in use and the company claims a record of saving97 per cent of all the lives placed in its care, and of that97 per cent 99 per cent were uninjured. In a total of219 accidents 94>^ per cent of the men. g6yi per centof the women and 98 per cent of the children weresaved, a record of which there is official proof, and onewhich certainly commends the Providence fender.
