Aside from the liability of collisions, there isthe delay to traffic, waste of power, wear on car equip-ment, wear on overhead work, wear of track, and otherwaste, all unnecessary, which in the course of a yearwould amount to a tidy sum of money. ADVERTISING CONTRACTS. C. F. Seidel & Co. made a contract with the Pittsburg& Birmingham Traction Company, for the advertisingprivilege of its cars for a term of three years at $5,000a year. An advertiser counted the cars in service, andthought he was paying for nearly twice as many cars asthere were in actual service. He broke his contract withSeidel & Co., who broke their contract with the com-pany. The latter sued to recover. Seidel & Co.s attor-ney made the point that as the railway company waschartered to carry passengers only, it had no legal rightto go into the advertising business. It is easy to create a fad, but fads do not remain longunless there is something about them that is pleasing allthe time. Ice skating is one of the fads that never growstiresome Roller skating and shooting the chutes soonoutlived their usefulness, yet ice skating has as manydevotees as when the old rocker and half rockerwere in fashion. The expense necessary to keep askating rink in condition is small. One man will beable to keep a large area clean. A little water puton top of the rough ice at night will become a smoothsurface of ice by morning. An
