WAV STATION AT HARRISTOWN. lects the ashes from the concrete pit beneath the grates and elevatesthem to a storage hopper over the switch track. The ash hopper hasa concrete lining to protect the steel work from injury. Thearrangement of the apparatus is such that when a car of coalhas been emptied the same car may be refilled with ashes withoutany switching. As there is an off-set in the fire wall between the boiler andengine rooms, the main steam header is half in one part of thebuilding and half in the other, being anchored where it passesthrough the off-set wall. The header is 16 in. in diameter through-out the entire length of the building, and is fed with 12-in. brancheseach of which serves four boilers. At each of four properly spaced points along the header whereengine connections are taken off, a special detad of constructionis used with a view to doing away with the use of separators betweenthe main header and the engine leads.
