A setof cam lever switches which the dispatcher works withhis left hand restores the drop to its normal position,which, when pulled down, also put out the correspond-ing lamps and puts him in direct connection with thepartv calling. He is provided with a large sheet, 21 by24 inches, on which are listed the numbers of all cars intheir regular order, under the proper headings of eachline. He is thus enabled to dispatch two to seven carsper minute, recording the time each one should leave theterminus on his sheet. A glance at this sheet gives himthe immediate condition of the entire system and exactlocation and direction of each car. Of course, the calls do not come in uniformly, but varj-a great deal owing to the number of cars in operation.The space between cars also varies as does the numberof cars in operation, which is governed by the trafficat different hours of the day in most places.
