course.The length of the track at turn-outs is 262.4 ft. from point topoinl of switch. Special care was used in placing the switches onaccount of the freight trains which must be operated over the sametrack. The total number of switches is 39. Overhead Construction. For the overhead work 115 plain iron poles and ;o8 brackelwere used. The line is divided into six independent circuits, eachof which consists of two copper conductors doubly insulated fromthe ground. The use of double conductors makes it unnecessary tosplice the wires and thus almost completely avoids the throwing offof the troliey. The minimum height of the line above the ground is 19.6 ft. Inthe town the trolley wire is suspended by means of steel span-wires.held either between two fixtures on the bouses or between twopoles at the sides of the street. At the crossingof the street railway track with that of the Jura Simplon railway,automatic signals indicate the right of way. The length of this lineis 5.37 miles, the Ifaldenstrasse-Kriens line being 3.15 miles longand the Maienhof-Krienzstutz line 22 miles long. When the con-struction of the Emmenbruecke line is finished, the total length ofcity lines will be 6.69 miles. Comparatively speaking, the profile ofthe roadway is favorable. The steepest grade is 45 per cent for alength of 984 ft. Upon the line to Kriens, the heaviest grade is 3.3per cent and upon that to Emmenbruecke, 4.7 per cent.Roadbed and Track. Where the soil is sufficiently thick, the roadway is built on an8-in. bed of small stones. This bed is covered with a 2-in. layer ofpebbles upon which the rails rest.
