ith overhead costs, financialconsiderations favor the adoption of the overhead type because itscost is only a fraction of that for high tension conduit work, andbecause its reliability is assured when properly installed. Overheadconstruction was therefore adopted wherever conditions of roadwaywould permit. The impracticability of constructing high tension overhead lines 306 STREET RAILWAY REVIEW (Vol. XVI. No. 6. in thickly populated sections of Brooklyn and Queens required re- i e to underground construction in two sections of the line, one of them comprising i/s miles of the main trunk line. Except wheresubmarine cables were used, at the Broad Channel and Beach Chan-nel drawbridges in the Jamaica Bay trestle, the remainder of thetransmission line is of the overhead type of construction. The trunk line as originally built carries five circuits from thepower station to Woodhaven Junction sub-station, running in aniS-duct conduit line to Dutchkills .St., thence on a line of steel poles

Abranch line of three circuits runs westward from Woodhaven Junc-tion to lb I i i New York sub-station, two circuits running thenceo Gi ind Vvi ib-station, all these being run in underground con-duits. To the east of Woodhaven Junction there are two circuitsrun underground to Dunton where the transmission is changed from underground to overhead, continuing easterly on steel poles toRockaway Junction sub-station. The branch circuits from Rock-away Junction to the portable sub-station terminal buildings at Bel-mont Park and Springfield Junction, are carried on wooden polesrunning along the Main Line and the Montauk divisions respec-tively to their destinations.
