MACHINERY LOFT, ATLANTIC AVE. STATION. give full attention to the control of the car. The air is suppliedthrough a pressure regulator from the signal pipe line of theBoston Elevated Railway Co. Each elevator has a suitable switchboard in the machinery loft.Besides the telephone connections, the machinery loft is suppliedwith an alarm bell signal which operates in case anything goeswrong in the chamber which contains the tunnel signal apparatus. The signal equipment for the tunnel is installed in a chamber onthe first floor above the tunnel platform. On this and on otherfloors, the elevator hatchways are provided with emergency doorsto be used in case a car should become stalled between the tunnellevel and the street. The signal equipment consists of a double set of 5-kw. GeneralElectric motor generators, converting the trolley current at 575

The circuit breakerson the switchboard are wired to the alarm bell previously mentioned as located in the machinery loft. The tunnel signals areoperated by alternating current and the current supply from theAtlantic Ave. chamber at 500 volts is suitably transformed for thetrack circuit work in each block. The motor-generator sets areequipped with automatic starting devices which operate in case oflow-voltage release. Electric heaters are used in this room tokeep the air thoroughly dry, and an emergency connection for 500-volt alternating current is arranged with the Edison ElectricIlluminating Co., of Boston through a special transformer for sta-tion lighting located in another chamber. Above the tunnel platform are two air chambers in each oiwhich is installed a 15 h. p., 575-volt motor, direct connected toan 84-in. d
