hwest Square, arid under thisname ceded to the city by William Penn, extends from Vine Street onthe north to Race Street on the south, and westward from EighteenthStreet, embracing an area of over seven acres. PUBLIC SQUARES.—RAILROAD DEPOTS. 87 hill Street cars pass at Nineteenth Street, one square distant. Otherlines of cars, exchanging with these several lines, render Logan Squareeasy of access from all parts of the city. Rittenhouse Square, originally called Southwest Square, extendsfrom Walnut Street on the north to Locust Street on the south, andfrom Eighteenth Street westward, embracing an area of six acres. Itis a popular place of resort, especially for children, being densely shadedby large trees and handsomely ornamented with fountains. Rittenhouse Square is reached from the northern section of the cityby the cars on Seventeenth Street, which pass one square distant, atSeventeenth and Walnut Streets; and from Fairmount by the SpruceStreet cars, which pass within a square, at Spruce and NineteenthStreets.
