Three hundred years after this, the Austrianswere again invading Italy, and at the time whenBonaparte entered it (1796), they had overrunand controlled the entire valley of the Po. Thecause of the war was still the deposing of theFrench monarch. The Austrian armies werefighting to force the people of France to takeback the rule of the hated kings. The armiesof France, on the other hand, represented therights of the people to choose their own formof government. Of course the French, intoxicated by thesuccess of the Revolution, were eager to spreadthe republican form of government all overEurope. There was a real possibility that theymight do so, and the kings were fighting indefense of their thrones. (The map shows theconquests of the new repubhc up to this time.) Such was the situation when young Bona-parte, twenty-six years of age, went down intoItaly to take command of the French army.
