nd destruction of conflict before rightwould triumph. France was the first nation to declare war againstGermany and was followed in the next four days byBelgium, England, Serbia and Russia. Two days afterRussia, Montenegro declared war, and before the year1914 ended Japan joined with these nations against Ger-many. In 1916, Portugal and Italy declared war. In 1917, the number of Germanys enemies doubled,as the following nations in order, made declarations ofwar: the United States, Cuba, Panama, Greece, Siam,Liberia and China. The following year, 1918, and the fourth year of thewar, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Haiti, Hondurasand Brazil, increased the number of combatants againstthe Germans to twenty-two. Some of these twenty-two nations declared war alsoagainst all of the other Teutonic Allies, Austria, Turkeyand Bulgaria, while some only against Austria, such asthe United States, and others still, only against Turkeyor Bulgaria.
