adfrom Burzil for two marches, to Gadhai (onemarch short of Astore). Gadhai to Alampi La Pass, two marches. Alampi La to Khatsura, a large village on theIndus, two marches. Khatsura to Skardu, one march. From Skardu there is a route to Astore, sixmarches through Shigathang. From Shigar to the Basha nullah, at the headof the left branch of the Shigar valley, is fourmarches. A man should be sent ahead to getready the skin rafts by which the Braldhu andBasha rivers have to be crossed. On theBraldhu river is Askole, above which is a worldof glaciers,^ the largest known out of the Arcticregions. To Leh there is a route by the Shayok riveras follows :— Shigar to Khapaloo, four marches. Khapaloo to Khalse, seven marches. Khalse to Leh, four marches. A very good way of spending four months ^ Mr and Mrs Bullock-Workman spent many months in 1903trying to find a pass over these gigantic glaciers into HunzaNagar, but could find nothing worthy of the name. Or, with longer leave,go to Ladakh first in April ; return by theShayok river to Baltistan in early July andspend two or three weeks after ibex, thencego to Astore and try for a markhor. This wouldgive you a chance of shooting all the gameworth shooting in the Himalayas. 4. Markhor. Markhor divide with ibex the stalking honoursof the shooting world.^ Much that has been saidabout ibex shooting applies also to markhor, soI will confine myself principally to informationregarding the best places in which to find them.A well-set-up markhor head, with 45 to 50-inchhorns and a long white beard, is perhaps one ofthe finest trophies to be had.
