They appear onthe coast towards the end of the monsoon, andare to be caught all through the cold weather. They are not so susceptible to the influence oftides, and will take often the bait all day long. The chief controllino; element in their case is thepresence of the shoals of sardines. These are attimes difficult to locate. One very good guideis the presence of the sea gulls. If the shoals ofsardines are about, the gulls will be busy. A good, sharp gaff shouldalways be at hand, as from their length they aredifficult to get into a net; and as they are asmall-scaled, tender-skinned fish, they present nodifficulties to the gaff. The smaller examplesare excellent eating, but when they grow largethe flesh gets coarse and oily in flavour. Khokari.—This fish deserves to be ver)^ muchbetter known than it is. It is a full, deep-bodiedfish, something like a perch ; the body is oblongand more or less compressed. It has resplendentscales, high shoulders, a small and shapely head, and very powerful tail and fins. In colour itranges from a bluish silvery sheen on the backto a golden colour below, and in season the finslook as if they were of beaten gold. In size itranges from 3 to 80 lbs., and very ordinary fishrun from 15 to 35 lbs. Its distribution through-out India
