From the Trib, July 21, 1949: "When a group of northwest side boys approached Mel Thillens for funds to sponsor a softball team in 1938, little did he realize that it was the beginning of a project which would grow into the largest men's softball circuit in Chicago area, the North Town league. .... The original team played its games in a vacant lot at Chase and California avs. The next year Thllens, who is prsident of a currency exchange at 2351 Devon av., leased the property at Kedzie and Devon for a diamond. Fans began coming to the games when lights were installed so he had stands built and a fence erected." |
