Summary

[edit]
Description

The god has a certain air of melancholy evident on his face and in his gaze; considering that this work was found at Villa Adriana (the country palace of Hadrian outside of Rome), it is possible that rather than representing Hermes, the statue is meant to be Antinous, the supposed lover of the emperor who died in 130 A.D.

While this theory is a pretty one, the features of the statue are generally considered too idealized to truly be associated with portraiture and thus most scholars support the identification of the figure with the young Hermes.

This statue depicts Hermes, the messenger god. He is shown at a young age and is entirely nude. The god is shown in a quiet moment and is delicately posed: his pelvis is turned slightly to the right with a corresponding torsion of the head and shoulders. He opens his arms and lets them hang softly at his side with his palms turned outward. His hair is a masterpiece of carefully sculpted curls which show the shape of the skull and are reminiscent of the style of Praxiteles (famous Greek sculptor). Only one curl is disorderly, falling onto the figure’s forehead.

Originally part of the Albani collection, the work was acquired by Pope Clement XII in the eighteenth century for the Capitoline Museums. The work dates to the late Hadrianic / early Antonine period (c.130-150 A.D.). capitolini.info/scu00741/
