English: The sign of the Burton Arms. The motto Quid Clarius Astris means 'what is brighter than the stars' on the sign of the Burton Arms 1089421. Refers to the Baillie family, created Baron Burton in 1897. Arms: Quarterly: 1st and 4th: Azure, nine "stars" three, three, two and one, argent within a bordure engrailed or charged with six cinquefoils of the field (Baillie, note, the charges are usually blazoned in the Baillie arms as "stars", not "mullets" as is usual); 2nd and 3rd: Gules, on a chevron cotised argent between three plates each charged with a fleur-de-lis azure a demi-lion couped of the first (Bass); Crest: A boar's head couped argent armed or langued gules; Supporters: On either side a Lion reguardant Sable each charged on the shoulder with a Plate thereon a Fleur-de-lys Azure and resting the inner hind leg on a Stag's Head cabossed proper (http://www.cracroftspeerage.co.uk/burton1897.htm) |
