rt-horse. The Bactrian or two-humpedcamel, though known to the ancient Assyrians,^ is not nowfound in the country. (PI. XXX., Fig. 1.) The horses arenumerous, and of the best Arab blood. Small in stature, butof exquisite synmietry and Avonderful powers of endurance,they are highly prized throughout the East,* and constitutethe chief wealth of the wandering tribes who occupy the gieaterportion of Mesopotamia. The sheep and goats are also of goodbreeds, and produce w-ool of an excellent quality. ^ (PI. XXX.,Fig. 2.) The coavs and oxen cannot be commended.^ Thedogs kept are chiefly gray hounds, which are used to coursethe hare and the gazelle. It is probable that in ancient times the animals domesticatedby the Assyrians were not very different from these. Thecamel appears upon the monuments both as a beast of burdenand also as Tidden in war, but only by the enemies of theAssyrians. (PI. XXX., Fig. 3.)
