Храм Весты был посвящен богине покровительнице Рима. В нем постоянно горел огонь, вывезенный по легенде Аэцием из Трои. Поддерживали огонь 6 жриц – весталок, пользовавшиеся особым уважением, в том числе правом занимать первые ряды в амфитеатрах. В течение 30 лет весталка была обязана соблюдать обет безбрачия, в случае нарушения которого ее надлежало замуровать в одном из подземелий Рима заживо, или же сжечь живьем, поскольку проливать ее кровь было преступлением. Покусившегося на ее честь надлежало задушить. Культ богини Весты был настолько популярен, что продержался до 382 г.

В 499 г до Р.Х. согласно легенде произошло сражение между латинянами и римлянами. Исход боя на берегах ныне исчезнувшего озера Региллуса в пользу римлян решили два неизвестных всадника, в которых, когда они остановились на месте будущего храма, чтобы напоить коней, были узнаны божественные близнецы - Кастор и Поллукс.
