The Porter closed in nearer, with every man on hispost behind the launching tubes and the guns. Fremont hailed with thunderingvoice: What ship is that ? No answer. Again he showed the night fleet signal;the stranger responded this time, but with a wrong signal. He hailed a secondtime; no answer came back. He then fired a shot across the strangers bow, when oneof the latters guns fired at the torpedo boat, the shell whistling close over the headsof the crew. Imagine the mental strain of this moment upon the torpedo crew andespecially the captain. Fremont, though, hailed again: What ship is that? Thisis the New York ! rang out a strong voice from aboard, recognized at once by Lieu-tenant Fremont as that of Captain Chadwick, the commanding officer of the bigAmerican cruiser. An awful catastrophe was averted in the last second.

He selected theharbor of Guantanamo, forty miles east of Santiago, which was the nearest one offer-ing enough room and sufficient protection against wind and sea. On the 6th of June Admiral Sampson went close in with his fleet to Santiago andbombarded the works in order to unmask their batteries. These batteries were in arather dilapidated state at the beginning of the war, but the Spaniards worked hardto strengthen them, partly by mounting guns from the Reina Mercedes.
