dy to receiveit as you ever were to receive anything by my ministry: for I am con-fident that God hath more truth yet to break forth out -of his holyword. I cannot sufficiently bewail the condition of the Reformedchurches, who have come to a period in religion, and will go no furtherthan the instruments of their reformation. The Lutherans cannot bedriven to go beyond Luther; for whatever part of Gods will he hathfurther imparted by Calvin, they will rather die than embrace it. Andso also the Calvinists stick where Calvin left them—a misery much tobe lamented. For though they both were shining lights in their times,yet God hath not revealed his whole will to them. Remember nowyour church covenant, whereby you engage with God and one another,to receive whatever light shall be made known to you from his writtenword. For it is not possible that the Christian world is so lately comeout of such thick anti-Christian darkness, and that full perfection ofknowledge should break forth at once.

His residence abroad, among so many forms of opinion andof order, had quickened in his mind the germ of a true comprehensivemovement. He also perceived the impossibility that the full maturityof truth and order should have burst forth in a day, as distinctly as aphilosophic historian of the nineteenth century. The Reformation, hewas sure, was no complete thing—probably it was more incompletethan any one has yet been able to imagine. And then he had the faithto accept his own conclusion.
